100 Years Ago: 1923

Only two girls were missing from the roll call at the Lewiston-Auburn telephone exchange on Park street, Lewiston, Tuesday morning – first day of the strike among telephone operators throughout New  England, called by Miss Julia O’Connor, department head of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. It was said that only one was on strike. Every place in the exchange was filled Tuesday morning, while three young women were picketing in front of the building.

50 Years Ago: 1973

Lewiston city vehicles including fire trucks, police cars and public works vehicles may become victims of the gasoline situation, which has plagued some private car owners in Lewiston-Auburn for a month already. The city has been informed by Mobil Oil Corp. that for the months of June. July and August, it will receive 92 per cent of the amounts of gasoline delivered during the same period last year “We’ll have to find a way to live with eight per cent less gas,” said Roger Pruneau.

25 Years Ago: 1998

The 5-4 ruling said a Maine woman whose dentist refused to fill a cavity at his office because she was HIV-positive is covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, the 1990 law that protects the disabled against discrimination in jobs, housing and public accommodations.
