People of Franklin County are seeing what may be the last days of the Sandy River Railroad, the narrow gauge. On June 30th the Maine Central gives up its management and control, and the Sandy River R. R. Phillips and Rangeley will probably go into receivers hands.

50 Years Ago: 1973

You don’t have to tell the residents of Megquier Hill Road that there’s a fly infestation in Maine this year. They know because they can’t use their decks, garages, barbecue grills or back lawns. Indeed, the flies around the DeCoster chick breeding barn are so bad that they can hardly even stand to be in their homes. “It’s just pathetic,” said Tom Schultz, who lives across the road from DeCoster’s facility, where 30,000 hens lay eggs that will become laying hens for the Turner plant. “If he can’t farm correctly, he ought not to be there,” Schultz said. But the flies aren’t unique to the DeCoster facilities. State agriculture officials say the problem extends throughout Maine and most of New England.

A band concert will be presented Thursday evening on the grounds in front of the Marcotte Nursing Home for residents and their family and friends. Appearing under the direction of Warrant Officer Nathan J. Diamond will be the 195th Army Band of the Maine National Guard which is located in Augusta.
