JAY – A fire heavily damaged a house at 43 Jewell St. on Thursday afternoon where four dogs escaped, one cat died, and multiple cats were missing, Corey Leclerc, deputy chief of Jay Fire Rescue, said.
No one was at the home when the fire was reported by a neighbor about 3:30 p.m., he said.
It is across from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3335.
Marissa McMannus, who was residing at the home owned by her mother, Kelly McMannus, said a neighbor broke a window to try to get pets out.

EMT Amber Southard of NorthStar Emergency Medical Services performed CPR on a cat named Gus but he didn’t survive.
Both Southard and EMT Emily Hargreaves gave oxygen to a 2-year-old Plott hound named Ziggy, saving its life.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
Leclerc said the home is insured.
About 35 firefighters responded from Jay, Farmington, Livermore and Livermore Falls.
