100 Years Ago: 1923
Unless the present week turns up some unexpected warm weather, the present month will be the coldest August since 1912. Slightly below normal weather conditions have prevailed on 19 of the 26 days of this month and the deficiency of heat totaled 72 degrees. On 11 days of this month it has rained and one-half of these rainy days have included thunder showers. During these showers only 1.84 inches of rain has fallen, there being needed .01 of an inch to equal the rainfall of August 1919, during which one of the smallest amounts of rain for August for many years fell.
50 Years Ago: 1973
Miss Maine, pert, pretty and personable…all this, intelligent and talented, too.
This description aptly applies to Maine’s representative at the Miss America pageant being held in Atlantic City, N.J., next week.
She is our own Miss Carlene Frances Quimby, 20-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Quimby of 451 Turner St., Auburn, who leaves tomorrow to participate in pageant ac- tivities scheduled for later in the week, climaxing with the crowning of the new Miss America on television Saturday evening.
Carlene was an honor student at Edward Little High School graduating in 1971 with fifth honor part. She studied one year at the University of Maine, Orono, where she was named to the Sophomore Eagles honor society, and last year attended the University of Maine, Farmington. She will enter her junior year at Farmington this fall and majors in speech correction and elementary education. Her ambition is to be a speech therapist and audiologist for which she will continue her. studies. She plans to work mostly with children.
Carlene has worked with Auburn Recreation Department and has a real rapport with the younger members of the community. Though she is a dean’s list student, having achieved a 4.0 average for the spring semester at Farmington, she has spent much of her spare time taping textbooks for blind students.
A busy young lady, she has many hobbies, including cooking, sewing, skiing, painting and wallpapering.
She has had training in piano, dancing, singing and dramatics and is a soprano for “The Designed Xpression,” a musical touring group of University of Maine students. Her talent presentation at the pageant will be a vocal solo “I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No.”
Miss Maine stands 5 ft., 4 in., weighs 110 pounds with measurements of 34-25-35. Her long hair is brown and falls in soft waves over her shoulders and her expressive eyes are also brown.
25 Years Ago: 1998
The juggling team “Fusion” from Buckfield performed for the freshmen class at Edward Little High School Tuesday as part of the school’s orientation program. The team of Michael Miclon, Jason Tardy and Mathew Tardy entertained while delivering a goal-setting message to students.
