HAMPSTEAD, N.C. – Derwood C. Begin, 83, of Hampstead, N.C., passed away peacefully on Aug. 15, 2023.

Derwood grew up in Auburn where he graduated from Edward Little High School, class of 1958. After high school he joined the USAF where he served for 20 years, retiring in 1979.

He married his high school sweetheart, Carol, in 1959, and they remained married for 53 years until her passing in 2013.

Derwood is survived by his three daughters, Darlene of Williams, Minn., Karen Edwards and her husband Michael Edwards of Casco, and Lisa Crawford and her husband Douglas of Holly Ridge, N.C. Also surviving are six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Derwood was a member of Scotts Hill Baptist Church in Wilmington, N.C.

Memorial service for Derwood will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at East Auburn Baptist Church, in Auburn. The service will begin at 12:30 p.m. and be directly followed by a short graveside service at St. Peter Cemetery, in Lewiston.
