DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Saturday, Aug. 19, a grandmother bought a crib/bed on Amberley Way in Auburn. Unfortunately, two pieces were left behind.

Please call 713-8445 to arrange retrieving those extra needed pieces. We’d really like to locate this grandmother. — Mary Ann, no town

ANSWER: I hope she sees this and you two can work out a plan to get together. Let us know what happens!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Since you asked about the comics in the Aug. 15 Sun Spots, in my opinion, I find them to be entertaining, but editorial cartoons are often funnier than the comics page.

I also saw your reference to crossword puzzling. Since I usually have to look up the definition of an answer or two that fill themselves in, I just assumed I was having an off day.

Lastly, the front page graphic predicting possible snow showers in August in Maine was the most bewildering amusement not on the funny pages. Was this just a test to see if anyone was paying attention or did the person in charge of graphics need to make a point in response to funny comics or puzzling crosswords?—Tom, Bridgton

ANSWER: Good grief, who knows? But I will find out! I’ve forwarded your remark about the snow graphic to the editor.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the lady who has been having troubles with fruit flies, I was too, and thought I was doing everything right. It wasn’t until I took absolutely everything off my kitchen counters and wiped them down every single day with white vinegar that they finally gave up and left. I also rinsed out my sink with vinegar often and I didn’t leave so much as a spoon on my counter or in the sink.

I changed out the dish cloth and towel every day and didn’t leave out any sponges. It was a chore, but worth it in the end. — Emma, no town

ANSWER: I went through this last summer and was surprised how stubborn fruit flies can be, but I finally prevailed, thanks to all the tips readers sent in!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Because the summer has been so wet, I’m having an issue with the drawers of my antique bedroom bureau and dresser smelling musty. The smell is lingering on the clothes in there. The furniture was my mother’s and I don’t want to get rid of it. Do you and your readers have any good tips? — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: You may have to invest in a dehumidifier, at least for the bedroom, if you don’t already have one. At least a fan running on low to keep the air moving would help. And you’ll want to air out clothing and the drawers for a few days when dry, sunny weather is predicted.

Sprinkle baking soda throughout the drawers and allow to sit for a couple days then vacuum out.

Once that’s done, you may want to purchase absorbent charcoal odor absorbers and keep them in the drawers. They work great, are inexpensive, and can be found at hardware stores, big box stores, and online.
