LEWISTON — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday night near Dufresne Plaza on Lisbon Street, according to police.

Two people walked into St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center sometime after 8:10 p.m. saying they were shot, said police spokesman Lt. Derrick St. Laurent. The injuries were not life-threatening, he said.

The shooting, which occurred shortly before the victims arrived at the hospital, was likely a single gunshot which hit both people, St. Laurent said. No calls came in to police reporting gunshots and two Sun Journal staff members working in the newsroom just off the plaza did not recall hearing any loud noises around that time.

St. Laurent said police continue to investigate and are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding buildings. He said the shooting does not appear to be random and victims’ identities would be released in a future news release.

Earlier in the evening, police were investigating several shots fired into apartments near 116 Pierce St. from which no injuries were reported.

St. Laurent said police do not believe the Pierce Street shooting is related to the Lisbon Street incident.

The city of Lewiston is hosting two public forums on safety next week, one by police and another by the mayor and city council, in response to several incidents and reports of gunfire over the summer, including a shootout on Knox Street in late July which left two dead.
