100 Years Ago: 1923

Six alligators arrived at Bear Pond park in Turner Saturday from Tampa Fla. They each measured two feet in length.

Moving pictures are being held every Monday and Thursday evening at the Park. Dances are being held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. The Bear Pond orchestra will play at the Dixfield Opera House next Friday evening.

50 Years Ago: 1973

Rolling pin throwing and grease pole climbing will be among the more spectacular competitive events taking place Saturday at the Moosehead Lake annual Region Chamber of Commerce Summer Festival. Beginning at noon, the Festival, which includes all manner of trials for woodsmen and canoeists, will last “until the last chicken is eaten, the last contest completed or the last person leaves,” according to Verdell LaCasce, co-chairman of the event and present canoe champion.

25 Years Ago: 1998

(Sun Journal photo) Former St. Peter’s School student and teacher Roger Theriault reminisces in front of the school on Bates Street in Lewiston. St. Peter’s School will open in the fall in Auburn at the former Sacred Heart School on Minot Avenue. Although Theriault is opposed to the move, he still plans to send his daughter to the new school.
