100 Years Ago: 1923
A remarkable record has been established in the building of Waterville’s new junior high school building, now nearing completion. Every dollar of the municipal money spent upon it has been spent in this city. It was designed by a Waterville architect, H. T. Hussey. Augusta Corey & Co., local contractors have constructed it and all material has been purchased from dealers in Waterville. It is said that no other building of similar size or larger in Maine has ever been erected with a similar record.
50 Years Ago: 1973
Lewiston fire crews were sent to 144 Lincoln Street this afternoon to check out a gas odor in an apartment, and a tenant, apparently overcome by fumes, was taken to the hospital.
25 Years Ago: 1998
A Michigan biologist working on behalf of a group of Belgrade Lakes residents has come up with a plan to rid Great Pond of the species of waterfowl blamed for the spread of swimmers’ itch. Dr. Harvey Blankespoor, who specializes in snail-borne diseases, outlined a program that combines inoculation, possible neutering and relocation of the common fish-eating merganser to environmentally nonsusceptible areas.
