NEW GLOUCESTER — At a time of year when seasonal businesses open their doors for the summer, one traditional stop in Maine has announced it will not reopen. Hodgman’s Frozen Custard on Route 100 in New Gloucester made the announcement Sunday, to the dismay of hundreds of fans from multiple generations.

“We want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for an amazing 69 years. It is the end of an amazing era but it’s time for our family to close the doors,” the Hodgmans wrote on their Facebook page. “We’ve loved serving endless frozen custard to this community with more sundaes then we can count. It’s been such a privilege to be a part of your lives for so many years.”

The Hodgmans have retired but have not said if they plan to sell the business, a question asked by more than a few people.

“I really hope someone swoops in with a cape and decides to keep this amazing legacy alive for generations to come,” one commenter wrote.

“So many wonderful memories around this place. I had a big old draft horse for a few years and we would trek on down and both get a custard,” wrote another.

Many left tributes and praise or fond memories of specific flavors — like pumpkin, orange pineapple, black raspberry and even plain.

“My parents took us there for years and it’s the first place my husband and I stopped when we came home. We started our kids on your place and it was always the biggest hit. Thank you for so many years of the best frozen custard anywhere,” wrote another former customer.

And then there was this comment: “I may never recover from this … best wishes to you!”
