The Twin City Thunder sat comfortably with a two-goal lead for much of Saturday’s game against the Northern Cyclones, then the floodgates opened in the third period.
The Thunder still had all the answers and skated away with a 6-3 win in a USPHL NCDC contest in Hudson, New Hampshire.
Alexander Snellman opened the scoring for the Thunder (54 points) just over three minutes into the game, and Tristan Rand made it 2-0 with 5:46 left in the first period.
The score remained that way until Jordan Gualtieri opened the third-period scoring for the Cyclones (62 points) with 11:42 left in the game.
Ben Portner and Rand answered to stretch Twin City’s lead to 4-1, then the teams traded off goals the rest of the way. Trace Norwell’s shorthanded goal with 1:05 left capped off the scoring.
Rand’s third-period goal was shorthanded, as well, and Denis Maliew also scored for the Thunder. Lewiston grad Damon Bossie notched his second assist of the game on Maliew’s goal.
Alex German scored the Cyclones’ second goal of the third period, and Gualtieri netted their final goal.
Christopher Miller stopped 46 of 49 shots in goal for Twin City, while Pavel Grishin made 29 saves for the Cyclones.
The Thunder finish up their regular season Monday against the South Shore Kings in Foxboro, Massachusetts, then meet the Boston Advantage in a North Division play-in game Wednesday in Auburn. The winner of the play-in game will face the North Division-leading Cyclones in the opening round of the NCDC playoffs.
