FRYEBURG — Gray-New Gloucester’s Michael Maines had the fastest elapsed time in Saturday’s Western Maine Conference Nordic ski championship skate race at Stark’s Hill, needing just 16:32.9 to trek the 5.1-mile course.

Maines’ time was just over six seconds faster than Yarmouth’s Aksel Yeo (16:39.0), whose Clippers team won the WMC title over Freeport and the Gray-New Gloucester.

Freeport’s Sam Robinson had the fastest combined time between Wednesday’s classical race and Saturday’s freestyle skate pursuit race. Maines’ Patriots teammate Michael Sweeney was third, behind Yarmouth’s Owen Redfield.

Greely’s Sylvia Harvey won the girls skate race, and Fryeburg’s Alanna Nataluk was the combined individual champion. The Greely girls won the team title.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
SACOPEE VALLEY 52, BUCKFIELD 16: Brooke Landry scored 14 points, and the 16th-seeded Hawks (3-15) allowed just four points in the first half as they won a Class C South play-in game against the 17th-seeded Bucks (1-14) in Hiram.

Keira Greene and Bridget Landry chipped in with seven points apiece for Sacopee, which led 17-2 after one quarter and 29-4 at halftime.

The Hawks advanced to play No. 1 Hall-Dale in the preliminary round.

Carley Coffman scored seven points for Buckfield.

DEERING 41, EDWARD LITTLE 32: Yipsi Sibo had 15 points and 12 rebounds as the eighth-seeded Rams (4-15) held off the ninth-seeded Red Eddies (2-17) in a Class AA North prelim in Portland.

Deering’s Maya Gayle scored 13 points, including eight in the first quarter when the Rams built a 15-5 lead. Nyabhana Lia added nine points on two 3-pointers and three foul shots.

Jenny Chaput led the Red Eddies with 11 points.

BOYS HOCKEY
MARSHWOOD/TRAIP/SANFORD/NOBLE 2, MT. ARARAT/LISBON/MORSE 1: Ryan Dumont assisted on goals by Andrew Brayne and Caden Fontaine, and TJ Brown made 17 saves for Marshwood/Traip/Sanford/Noble (7-8-1) in a win over Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse (6-9) in Dover, New Hampshire.

Bryce Poulin scored midway through the second period for Mt. Ararat after the Knighthawks opened a 2-0 lead.

SOUTH PORTLAND/FREEPORT/WAYNFLETE 6, EDWARD LITTLE 1: Dylan Hannan notched two goals and two assists, and South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete (10-5) scored two short-handed goals at Auburn’s Norway Savings Bank Arena while handing the Red Eddies (13-1) their first loss of the season.

Cullen Adams and Tobey Lappin each added a goal and two assists, helping the Red Riots build a 5-0 lead before Campbell Cassidy scored for Edward Little late in the second period.

Roan Hopkins and Richard Gilboy were the other goal scorers for South Portland. Jasper Curtis stopped 23 of 24 shots.

ST. DOMINIC 3, WINDHAM/WESTBROOK/BONNY EAGLE/SACOPEE VALLEY 2: Erik Jones had a goal and two assists for the Saints (1-13) in a win over Windham/Westbrook/Bonny Eagle/Sacopee Valley (4-10-1) at USM Arena in Gorham.

Miles Frenette and Curtis Wheeler also scored for St. Dom’s. Jayden Lynn made 23 saves in the win.

Sam Foley recorded a goal and an assist for Windham. LucasCaron got the other goal and Porter Krause stopped 26 shots.
