After their winning streak was stopped Friday night, the Twin City Thunder found themselves back in the win column Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Philadelphia Hockey Club 5-1 at the Northern Cyclones Columbus Day Showcase in Hudson, New Hampshire.

They fell 3-0 to the Hartford Junior Wolfpack late Friday night.

“I am definitely pleased with the effort, the guys rebounded well from — to be honest — a pretty poor effort from the second game that we had against the Hartford Wolfpack,” Thunder coach Doug Friedman said. “It’s good to see with the travel we had and showing up. We had a solid game (today).”

Aleksi Petrow paced the offense with two goals while Nicolas Poirier had a goal and an assist from the blue line. Defenseman Nick Malik assisted on all five goals.

“It’s been nice to see, for the most part every game we have somebody stepping up who maybe hasn’t on a regular basis,” Friedman said. “It’s good to see Aleksi get a couple of goals. Again, we had three power-play goals today as well. The guys are starting to really get that and move the puck around to create some good opportunities.”

Petrow opened the scoring on the man-advantage with Poirier and Malik picking up the helpers just past the eight-minute mark. Malik setup Zachary Desmarais’ power-play goal at the 17:17 mark of the opening period.

Poirier found the back of the net with eight minutes remaining in the second period with Malik and Cooper Davis setting the goal up. Petrow scored the Thunder’s final power-play goal of the day with 2:23 remaining in the middle frame.

Elliot Greene put Philadelphia on the board at the 4:13 mark of the third period. Zachary Simpson scored the Thunder’s final tally nearly halfway through the third.

In all, the Thunder fired 38 shots on Philadelphia’s goal.

“Again, that’s one of our goals is to get pucks in deep,” Friedman said. “Our forecheck has been going well and we are causing a lot of turnovers. As a result, we’re getting additional pucks to the net.”

The Thunder close the showcase on Sunday morning against the New York Aviators at 8 a.m.
