AUBURN — The Androscoggin County Commission unanimously approved the hiring of Clarice Proctor of Lewiston as the county’s finance director and treasurer.

Clarice Proctor

Proctor will begin working for the county May 14.

“She’s going to be excellent,” County Administrator Larry Post said after Wednesday’s meeting. “We’re very lucky that she’s going to be working for us.”

Proctor replaces longtime treasurer Robert Poulin, who resigned in early February due to health reasons and died a few weeks later.

Poulin had served as county treasurer since 2001.

For the past year, Proctor has served as the finance director for Sagadahoc County. She also has a long history of working for area nonprofit organizations. She has worked for various agencies for 25 years, she said.

Proctor will add the title and duties of treasurer to her finance director role for Androscoggin County.

The chance to eliminate the daily commute to Bath appealed to Proctor.

“I like government work,” Proctor said. “I wanted to work in the county where I live.”

A hiring committee of eight, made up of commissioners, department heads and Post, interviewed four candidates for the position. Commissioners then met in executive session April 18 to consider the finalists

Commissioners voted 6-0 with no additional discussion Wednesday to hire Proctor.

A workshop to discuss holding joint meetings with the budget committee during the upcoming budget process was postponed when no member of the budget committee showed up.
