BRUNSWICK — The Bates College softball team scored six times in the fifth inning and held on to top NESCAC East rival Bowdoin by a score fo 6-4 in college softball action Friday afternoon.

The win is Bates’ first over Bowdoin since 2012.

Trailing 3-0, the Bobcats (16-10) got to work against Bowdoin starter Kate Hoadley in the top of the fifth. Freshman Payton Buxton drew a walk to start the frame. With one away, Bates bunted Buxton to second, and she moved to third on a passed ball. Freshman Caroline Bass drew a walk and junior Andrea Russo singled in Buxton to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Pelletier followed with a single, and a Polar Bears (22-8) error allowed Bass to score, while placing Russo and Pelletier at third and second. Sophomore Julia Panepinto tied the game at three with an RBI double, putting runners at second and third.

Senior Paige Ahlholm followed with a two-RBI single, and chased Hoadley from the game. Freshman Mary Collette greeted new pitcher Riby Stilanen with an RBI double, driving in Ahlholm and putting Bates up 6-3.

Bates 8, Trinity 7

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bates baseball team scored five runs in the fourth inning, and its bullpen sealed the deal for an 8-7 win over Trinity College on Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats (11-12) had an 8-1 lead before the Bantams (13-11) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to chase Bates starter Connor Russell from the game. Junior Alex Simon got the final two outs of the sixth, and tossed a scoreless seventh.

The Bates offense got things rolling in the top of the second. Junior Dan Trulli doubled off Trinity starter Erik Mohl to start the frame. Junior Justin White singled Trulli to third, and one out later, sophomore Giovanni Torees singled Trulli home to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

Bates chased Mohl from the game in their five-run top of the fourth.
