The Bates College swimming and diving program had a successful start to the NCAA Division III championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.
The women’s 200-yard medley relay team placed 10th Wednesday, and the men’s 200 medley relay placed 12th.
The swimmers involved in those relays all earn Honorable Mention All-America status.
Janika Ho (backstroke), Logan McGill (breaststroke), Caroline Apathy (butterfly) and Boothbay Harbor’s Hope Logan (freestyle) set a new school record in the women’s 200 medley relay trials, achieving a time of 1 minute, 44.18 seconds. That time broke a record set in 2016 — McGill was also part of that relay.
The four swimmers broke their own record in the consolation finals, finishing in 1:43.86.
The All-America honor is the 10th of McGill’s career, the second-most in the women’s team’s history. Ho earned her fourth All-America, while Logan claimed her second and Apathy her third.
The Bates men’s 200 medley relay — Riley Ewing (backstroke), Alex Bedard (breast), Teddy Pender (butterfly) and Jonathan Depew (freestyle) — finished in 1:30.81.
The All-America honor is Pender’s sixth, Ewing’s fifth, Depew’s third and Bedard’s first.
The Division III championships run through Saturday.
Delpeches sign with Bristol
The next step for 2017 Bates graduates Marcus and Malcolm Delpeche in their professional basketball journeys is the British Basketball League.
This week, the Delpeche twins signed with the Bristol Flyers for the remainder of the season.
They recently finished their first pro season in Germany with the Grevenbroich Elephants, whom they helped to a 21-3 record and a second-place finish in Regionalliga West.
Malcolm averated 13.9 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Elephants. Marcus, meanwhile, put up 11.5 points and pulled down 5.3 rebounds per game.
Pelletier honored
Bates sophomore Kirsten Pelletier has been awarded the first NESCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award of the season.
Pelletier, a former Messalonskee standout, pitched six complete games in the Bobcats’ 12-game opening stretch in Florida earlier this month, highlighted by a no-hitter against North Central in the season-opener.
She finished the week with a 5-1 record and a 0.99 ERA, with 44 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings.
Pelletier is the first Bates (9-3) player to received a NESCAC award since Kelsey Freedman in April 2015.
Trulli hitting well
Bates’ baseball team is off to a 2-6 start, but takes a two-game winning streak into this Saturday’s doubleheader at Salem State, after losing its first six games.
Dan Trulli is the Bobcats’ leader with 10 hits, one home run and seven RBI. He also has a .303 batting average.
Bates’ first home games are a doubleheader against Bowdoin on Saturday, March 31.
