I agree with Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald about general assistance for asylum seekers (Sun Journal, Jan. 31). In the article, Macdonald stated that those people are victimizing the people of Lewiston by making residents support them.
As a taxpayer, I agree with him.
In response to Ted LaCrone of Winthrop (letter, Feb. 1), I would ask him why he lives in Winthrop? He should try living in Lewiston and see how much it costs to live here, with its high taxes (including a rain tax) and more school construction that costs millions of dollars.
The asylum seekers should move to Winthrop. Then LaCrone might understand.
Chuck Barnies, Lewiston

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
