DEAR SUN SPOTS: Share your love of reading with children and make a difference in your community. Just one hour a week is all it takes to promote literacy. If you are interested, please contact the BookReach Volunteer Reading Program. We serve children ages birth to 5 in day cares throughout Lewiston, Auburn and Minot. Reading aloud with children is an important part of developing early reading skills. You can be a part of helping a child develop a love of reading and help set the stage for their future success.
BookReach is an early literacy program of the Lewiston and Auburn public libraries. For more information and an application packet for volunteer readers or day care providers, please contact Trisha Scribellito at bookreach@lewistonmaine.gov or call (207)513-3004, ext. 3515. — Trisha, no town.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Sun Spots and the Sun Journal really work. On Oct. 3 you ran my letter looking for the owners of Houston and that afternoon they read it and called. This saved them from needlessly giving him all of his shots again as they now have the information that they needed. Thank you! — Bill, South Paris.
ANSWER: Sun Spots is happy to help and very glad that Houston the German shepherd is well taken care of.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am searching for the genealogy book “Reuben Wing Sr.” by Harold Perham. My mother was a Wing and my brother would like to find a copy of this. I know that not many copies were printed and that Mr. Perham has since passed, but I am hoping that someone may have a copy of this floating around that they no longer want. I live in Dixfield and am willing to come and pick up or pay postage if one is found. You can contact me at (207) 562-8859 if you have this book or know where I can find one. Thank you. — Eleanor Dunham, Dixfield.
ANSWER: An extensive search of the world wide web could not uncover a copy of this book for sale as it is out of print and there are currently no used copies for sale. However, it is available in the stacks at the Maine Historical Society’s library. Their materials are for library use only but photocopying may be allowed for a fee. The library is open to members and students free of charge, and to the general public for a $10 daily fee. More information is available at their website, http://www.mainehistory.org/library_overview.shtml or you can call (207) 774-1822 x233.
If any readers have a copy of this book, “Reuben Wing, Senior: of Old Winthrop, Old Livermore’s town, Wayne and Monmouth and his two wives, Priscilla and Sally” by Harold C. Perham, that they are willing to part with, please contact Eleanor.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Along with reading our community calendar, readers may also find local craft fairs in the new Craft Fair column, which will publish on Thursdays, beginning Oct. 13, in Connections. The column will run throughout fall.
Craft fair notices may be submitted to the Sun Journal no later than two weeks before the fair begins by emailing communitynews@sunjournal.com. Thank you, Sun Spots! — Abby Austin, Sun Journal Community News Editor.
