JACKMAN — Senior catcher Jared Eastman produced four hits in the first game, while Gerry Gagne and Ralph Dunn collected three hits each in the nightcap as Buckfield swept Forest Hills, 8-7 and 16-4, in EWC baseball action Saturday afternoon.

Eastman had two doubles in the early innings of the first game and two triples down the streatch, including a pivotal one in the seventh inning. Following Eastman’s triple in the seventh, Dunn singled him home for the game-winning tally.

Senior pitcher Matt Turner had a three-run home run in the first game and another round tripper in the second, but the Tigers (4-3) came away empty handed on the day.

Softball

Buckfield sweeps Forest Hills

JACKMAN — Ashley Campbell recorded seven hits over two games and Abby Fogg added six as Buckfield turned on the offense to sweep an East-West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday against Forest Hills, taking Game 1 20-3, and game 2 by a count of 24-4.

Abby Shields was in the circle for the first game for the Bucks (6-1), and she helped her own cause with a pair of doubles. Fogg and Campbell each added four of the Bucks’ 24 hits in the opener.

In the second game, Amber Arsenault toed the rubber, earning the win for the Bucks. Courtney Lowell and Campbell also hit doubles in Game 2.

Linda Riley ripped a triple for the Tigers in the opener, and Abby Carrier belted a double in the second contest to pace the home team’s offense. Amy Carrier was the pitcher of record for Forest Hills in both contests.

Boys’ lacrosse

Waynflete 13, Oak Hill 6

WALES — Midfielder Ford Malter levied a game-high five goals as Waynflete coasted to a 13-6 victory over Oak Hill in boys’ lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers added six goals in the fourth quarter to their tally. Malter tallied two assists and five groundballs to goal along with his five goals.

Senior attackman Kaleb Sturtevant and Matt Gilbert posted a pair of goals each for the Raiders in the losing effort.

Senior goalie Matty Martin made 16 saves for Oak Hill, while goalie Graham Ratner only needed to peel back four to earn the win in net for Waynflete.

College baseball

Southern Maine 4, Eastern Connecticut 2

GORHAM — Junior Sam Dexter hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and seniro Andrew Richards threw a complete game four-hitter as the University of Southern Maine defeated the Eastern Connecticut State University 4-2 in the championship game of teh 2015 Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon.

With rookie Nick Bowie of South Paris aboard as the result of a leadoff single, Dexter crushed the first pitch from southpaw Jacob Smith over the left field fence for his eighth home run of the season and a 3-1 lead.

Rookie Devin Warren, who had singled in Dexter for the first run of the game, connected for a big insurance run in the eighth by hitting his first career home run over the left field fence for the final score of 4-2.

Bates 8, Tufts 7

NASHUA, N.H. — Bates survived an eighth inning surge to edge out Tufts University, 8-7, in the elimination game of the NESCAC Championships at Holman Stadium Saturday morning.

Relief pitcher Sam Maliska came in for the Bobcats (17-19) with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning. Maliska eventually struck out the Jumbos (26-10) right fielder, Harry Brown, looking with the tying run on third base. Rob DiFranco threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save of the year.

Bates wasted no time in putting up runs as Ryan McCarthy led off the home half of the first with an opposite field home run.

In the second, the Bobcats exploded for seven runs, sending 12 batters to the plate and knocking pitcher Andrew David from the game. Sam Berry broke the game wide open with a three-run shot for an 8-0 lead.

Tufts got to the Bates bullpen in the eighth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and taking advantage of some wildness from Bobcat pitchers. Tufts scored seven times before Maliska cauterized the bleeding with a strike out.

Amherst 6, Bates 5

NASHUA, N.H. — Amherst scored all six of their runs in the first four innings off Bates as they held on for a 6-5 victory in the final elimination game of the NESCAC Chamionships at Holman Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Mekae Hyde and Ryan McCarthy sandwiched a pair of singles around two outs, bringing Same Berry to the plate. Berry launched a three-run shot over the left center field fence.

From that point forward it was a battle of the bull pens, with relief pitcher Sam Schneider tossing a perfect two and a third innings to pick up the win for the Jeffs (25-12). Bates right-hander Chris Ward allowed only one hit in relief while striking out seven in the losing effort.
