HALLOWELL — The best aspect of Friday’s softball game as far as Telstar coach Jim Lunney was concerned was that it finally ended.
His previously unbeaten Rebels stumbled through a difficult day on the field. Hall-Dale produced a solid effort and took advantage of Telstar’s mistakes in an 11-2 win between two of the top teams in Western C.
“The good news is that this game’s over,” Lunney said. “That’s what I told the girls. We’re no different than we were before this game except we don’t feel very good. But we’re no different. We play Madison Monday and we’ve got to play better defense than we did today and hopefully we’ll bounce back.”
Telstar had eight errors in the game. Many of them were on routine ground balls or fly balls. The Rebels looked tentative early and out of sync in the field at times. Pitcher Olivia York threw hard and was solid in the circle but didn’t get much defensive support.
“It wasn’t a very good game for us,” Lunney said. “That’s more errors than we’ve made all year. And they weren’t tough errors.”
Hall-Dale pitcher Rebecca Ackerson threw a four-hitter to get the win. She struck out 13 and walked just one.
“We just didn’t hit much,” Lunney said. “We’ve got to do a better job hitting. They had a good pitcher. She threw well. We weren’t aggressive enough. We let her get strikes.”
Tehya Johnson had two hits for the Rebels and scored a run. Hayley Peterson had a hit and an RBI while Ashley Savage had a hit and scored a run.
“We had a couple of hits up the middle” Lunney said. “We couldn’t string together any hits. You have to givekmills@sunjournal.com
