DIXFIELD — Junior catcher Gage Cote started and ended the game in grand fashion, singling in the first and doubling in the eighth, as Monmouth notched a 3-2 victory over Dirigo in MVC baseball action Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cote scored on a ground out. Cote also scored the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Hunter Richardson.

Richardson’s sacrifice fly earned himself the pitching victory as he came on in relief in the sixth inning.

Pitcher Gavin Arsenault struck out nine for the Cougars (0-1) and produced a double on offense in the losing effort.

Spruce Mountain 9, Maranacook 8

LIVERMORE FALLS — Spruce Mountain had six different players drive in runs as the Phoenix rallied to beat Maranacook 9-8 in KVAC baseball Friday.

Matt Vigue, Colin Parker, Tom Young and Landon Brochu each had a pair of hits for Spruce Mountain (2-0). Cam Brochu had two hits and four RBI for the Black Bears (0-1).

Ian O’Donnell pitched the first four innings and earned the win for Spruce Mountain.

The Phoenix were down 7-3 after three innings but scored five in the fourth to take the lead. Spruce Mountain added another in the fifth and then held off the Black Bears for the win. Parker came in to pitch in the fifth to earn the save.

Cony 3, Lewiston 2, 8 inn.

AUGUSTA — Tom Foster knocked in the game-winning run in the eighth inning as Cony dispatched Lewiston in KVAC baseball action Friday afternoon.

Junior pitcher Austin Wing pitched eight solid innings for the Blue Devils. Wing struck out four, gave up just three hits and only one earned run in the hard luck loss.

Senior first baseman Carter Chabot drove in Lewiston’s first run ans recorded two of the Blue Devils (0-2) three hits.

With one out in the home half of the eighth inning, the Rams (1-1) benefited from an errant throw which placed the batter on second base. Foster proceeded to drive the runner home for the walk off win.

Gardiner 16, Leavitt 2

TURNER — Gardiner struck for 11 runs in the first two innings before tidying up with a 16-2 five-inning victory over Leavitt in baseball action Friday afternoon.

Josh Farrin and Devin Maschino posted two hits apiece to account for half of the Tigers’ eight hits. Eli Fish produced a double for Gardiner.

Josh McKelvey struck out seven and scattered five hits in the winning effort.

Eli Calder pitched the first two innings for the Hornets, before being relieved by Chandler Lajoie and Chad Morin over the next several innings. The pitching battery was handcuffed by six Leavitt errors.

Sacopee Valley 6, Poland 3

SOUTH HIRAM — Devin Day went 3-for-3 as Sacopee Valley doubled up Poland 6-3 in EWC baseball action Friday afternoon.

The Hawks (1-0) scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Kyle Jordan smashed a double to plate a pair of runs.

Adam Mocciola contributed a pair of hits and an RBI for the Knights (0-3) in the losing effort.

Starting pitcher Rodrick Maynard struck out five and earned the pitching victory with six inning of work for Sacopee Valley, while Ethan Caillier suffered the loss with five innings of work for Poland.

Mountain Valley 10, Telstar 0

RUMFORD — Tim Fitzgerald started and John Pepin came on in relief for Mountain Valley and the duo combined for an one-hitter and nine strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Telstar in a five-inning game

The Mountain Valley (1-0) offense sprayed nine singles as Ian Austin and Josh Mason each had a pair. The Falcons opened up the game in the second inning as they crossed the plate four times to open up their lead to 6-0 after scoring twice in the first. They scored twice in the fourth and the fifth to round out the scoring.

Tanner Wheeler had the lone hit for the Rebels (0-1).

Mt. Blue 3, Edward Little 2

AUBURN — Amos Herron crossed the plate on one of two EL errors in the third inning for Mt. Blue’s third run of the inning and he made that stand as the pitcher of record Friday, helping the Cougars to their first win of the season, a 3-2 triumph over the Red Eddies.

Herron struck out six to earn the win, outdueling EL’s Jarod Norcross-Plourde, who set down nine by way of strikeout and allowed just four hits.

Brad Durell and Ryan Pratt also scored for Mt. Blue (1-1) in the third inning. The Eddies (1-1) plated runs in the third and sixth innings.

Softball

Oxford Hills 9, Hampden Academy 3

HAMPDEN — Annika Kahkonen belted a home run and drove in five runs to help lift Oxford Hills to a 9-3 win over Hampden Academy in high school softball action Friday.

Anna Piirainin added a pair of hits for the Vikings, who are off to a 2-0 start.

Rilee Walker had a triple and Abby Lord a double for the Broncos (0-2).

Hall-Dale 6, Oak Hill 3

WALES — Hall-Dale broke a tie with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to beat Oak Hill 6-3 in MVC softball Friday.

Gabby Brown had two hits and three RBI for the Bulldogs. Morgan Rush also had a pair of hits.

Down 2-0, Oak Hill scored three runs in the third for the lead. Hall-Dale tied it with a single run in the fourth. The Bulldogs (1-0) took the lead with a pair in the sixth and added another run in the seventh.

Olivia Maynard and Rebecca Ackerson combined to hold Oak Hill (0-1) to just four hits. Sadie Goulet and Makayla Nadeau pitched for the Raiders and allowed just six hits.

Fryeburg 23, Traip 0

FRYEBURG — Sophomore pitcher Nicole Bennett pitched a no-hitter and drove in four runs with three hits as Fryeburg pounded Traip 23-0 in a WMC softball game Friday.

Bennett struck out eight and walked just one in a game shortened to five innings by the 12-run rule.

Makayla Cooper and MacKenzie Buzzell each had four hits and drove in three runs for the Raiders (1-0). Kristin Chipman had three hits while Julia Quinn had a hit and drove in four runs.

The Raiders scored five each in the second and third innings and added to the lead with seven runs in the fourth. Six more runs came in the fifth.

Edward Little 7, Mt. Blue 5

AUBURN — Taylor Depot plated three runs as Edward Little secured a 7-5 victory over Mt. Blue in KVAC softball action Friday afternoon.

The Red Eddies (2-0) scored four quick runs in the bottom of the first inning and recovered a pair in the fourth on a Depot double to hold off Mt. Blue in the second game of the season.

The Cougars (1-1) scored two runs in the second inning followed by a pair in the third on singles from Taylor Burke and Kasadie Barker.

Molly Murray started and threw 2 2/3 innings to earn the mound win for Edward Little.

Dirigo 15, Monmouth 3

DIXFIELD — Ellen Wainwright tallied three hits to lead Dirigo to a 15-3, five-inning victory over Monmouth in softball action Friday afternoon.

The Cougars peppered 14 hits and stole 19 bases to put on an offensive display. Katelyn Olsen went 2-for-4 at the plate and struck out eight for a complete game win for Dirigo.

Caroline Bonenfant had the only Mustang hit which was a two-run home run in the first inning.

Telstar 19, Mountain Valley 1

RUMFORD — Junior pitcher Olivia York fanned 11 batters as Telstar snapped up a 19-1 victory over Mountain Valley in MVC softball action Friday afternoon.

The Rebels (1-0) scored seven runs in the fourth and seventh innings to garner their season opener. Ashley Savage, Tehya Johnson and Sadie Ellsworth recorded three hits each for Telstar. Savage and Johnson included a pair of doubles apiece.

Pitcher Lindsay Marston was outstanding on the mound through the first three innings for the Falcons (0-1). She nurtured a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before the cold air began to take hold of her pitching game.

Cony 12, Lewiston 0

AUGUSTA — Sydney Cheever and Skyler Watson launched home runs as Cony cruised to a 12-0 shutout victory over Lewiston in KVAC softball action Friday afternoon.

Megan Theriault was the only base runner for the Blue Devils (0-2), reaching on an error. Makayla Girouard gave up seven runs in the first two innings in the losing effort.

Gardiner 4, Leavitt 2

TURNER — Gardiner scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to overtake Leavitt for a 4-2 victory in softball action Friday afternoon.

Lilly Chepke roped a two-run double in the sixth frame, and the Tigers secured another pair on an error.

Pitcher Kristal Smith fanned 10 batters and earned the mound win for Gardiner. Pitcher Abby Robertson struck out four batters over six innings and gave up no walks for Leavitt in the losing effort.

Poland 5, Sacopee Valley 1

POLAND — Sarah Walton produced a pair of hits, including a triple and three RBIs, to power Poland to a 5-1 victory over Sacopee Valley in softball action Friday afternoon.

The Knights (2-0) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, and no one scored again until Poland posted another three in the bottom of the sixth. Michaella Arseanult accumulated three hits for Poland.

Maddie Day contributed two of the Hawks three hits, and singled in their only run in the top of the second inning.

Kylie Martin struck out 12 batters to earn the mound win for Poland.

College Baseball

Bates 9, Tufts 4

MEDFORD, Mass. — Senior Sam Berry hit a pair of two-run home runs to spur Bates to a 9-4 victory over Tufts in the opener of a three-game NESCAC East Division series Friday at Huskins Field.

Berry’s two-run home run over the hitter’s backdrop in center field gave the Bobcats (12-13) a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Bates chased Tufts starter Tim Superko in the fourth. He allowed five hits and six runs with five walks in 3.2 innings.

In addition to Berry’s fourth-inning home run, senior right fielder Nate Pajka had an RBI single and senior Mekae Hyde of Lewiston walked and scored on a wild pitch during the inning.

The Bobcats extended their lead to 8-0 with two in the fifth. Berry loaded the bases with a single and Hyde walked to plate the first run. Pajka then scored on senior Rockwell Jackson’s foul out to right. 

College Softball

Bates 2, Tufts 0

LEWISTON — Kelsey Freedman threw a five-hit shutout and hit a home run for the second day in a row as Bates defeated Trinity 2-0 in NESCAC East action Friday afternoon.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Freedman launched a rocket over the center field fence to give the Bobcats (8-19) a one run lead.

Still in the first, Kira Shaikh was hit by a pitch and stole second. But, Trinity’s pitcher, Hannah King, found a groove, retiring 11 of the next 12 batters, as one Bobcat reached on an error.

The Bobcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, as Lockhart singled through the left side, scoring Paige Ahlholm, who walked and took second on a sacrifice bunt from Victoria Fitzgerald.

New England College sweeps UMaine-Farmington

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington showed a lot of heart by coming back twice in doubleheader action, but failed to overtake New England College with 3-2 and 3-1 losses in softball action Friday afternoon.

Starter Emily Vitone battled out of some tight jams in the late innings of the first game. But, the Pilgrims caused some serious damage in the top of the seventh, producing two hits to plate a pair of runs.

The two squads scored in each of their first trips to the plate again in the second game.

After the Pilgrims got a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the frame, Meryl Bond drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first and came around to score when Katie Clark roped a triple to left field for the Beavers (4-20).

Vitone pitched two complete games with three combined strikeouts in the twinbill outing.
