MEDFORD, Mass. — The No. 1 team in the country is unbeaten no more.

Behind five goals from Falmouth’s Charlie Fay, Bates College upended top-ranked Tufts University 12-8 Tuesday in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action.

Jack Allard added four goals and Jack Strain added two more for the Bobcats (7-4, 4-4 NESCAC), who launched 24 shots on target at Tufts keeper Alex Salazar, scoring on half of them.

Bates has now won four of its past five games, and Fay has netted 19 goals in that stretch.

The Bobcats’ defense held the high-flying Jumbos (10-1, 6-1) to just 19 on-target shots, and Jo Faria turned aside 11 to earn the win in the cage.

Fay’s first two goals game in a back-and-forth first quarter, after which Tufts led, 3-2. 

The Bobcats took control in the second frame. Fay added two more, sandwiched around an unassisted Kyle Webber  strike, to give the visitors a 5-3 lead at halftime.

In the third, Bates stormed out of the gate, scoring three more consecutive goals, one each from Allard, Fay and Strain.

The Jumbos rallied for three of their own in the latter half of the third to draw back within a pair. But the Bobcats locked down on defense and added four more goals in the fourth to just two from Tufts to secure the win.

Peter Gill and Austin Carbone led Tufts with a pair of goals each.

Softball

Bowdoin sweeps Bates

LEWISTON — The Bates softball team outhit Bowdoin College, but ultimately dropped both games of a doubleheader, falling 4-1 in Game 1 and 5-2 in Game 2 on Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field in NESCAC action.

The Bobcats (1-12, 0-7 NESCAC) collected 15 hits to Bowdoin’s (14-5, 3-0) 12 in the two games, but lacked the clutch hit, leaving 17 players on base in both games.

Junior Brenna Callahan threw the complete game for Bates in the first game, allowing four hits and four runs in six innings while striking out one.

Julia Geaumont (7-2) picked up the win for Bowdoin, striking out six while scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing one earned run.

In Game 2, Senior Kelsey Freedman tossed the complete game for Bates, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out a pair.

Emily Griffin threw all seven innings for Bowdoin, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out nine.

Sophomores Maddie Inlow of Falmouth and Jenney Abbott of Rangeley started the third frame with back-to-back singles, but the Bobcats could do no further damage.

Women’s lacrosse

Thomas 10, UMF 7

WATERVILLE — The University of Maine at Farmington women’s lacrosse team (2-6, 1-3) scored seven second-half goals, but Thomas College matched the Beavers with seven goals of its own and held on for a 10-7 win Tuesday.

Junior Ayla Allen of Rumford broke the shutout and brought the Beavers within striking distance after scoring two of her team-high three goals in the second half.
