Speeders beware: Sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling the back roads of Androscoggin County this summer with a watchful eye for those who exceed the speed limits.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Rielly Bryant applied for a $20,000 federal grant through the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety which will help the department crack down on speeding in rural areas of the county.
According to Bryant, certain areas in various towns have been identified as having high volumes of speed-related crashes. The department is hoping that motorists will slow down without having to be told to do so.
The trouble spots include Route 4 in Turner and sections of Route 26 in Poland, police said, but other roads in other towns are also a part of the list. Police are still gathering input from the public on where more patrols are needed.
Drivers who choose to continue to speed in these selected areas, Bryant said, will likely receive a summons — and the cost of those tickets can run anywhere from $119 to $236, depending on the speed of the offender.
The special-enforcement details will continue through the summer.
