Left fielder Jared Kuvaja smashed a game-winning, walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Platz Nation to a thrilling 8-7 win over the Bad News Bears in the Auburn Rec Coed Upper League Softball Championship. Kuvaja and co-MVP Shane Ciriello led the offense, putting the finishing touches on an impressive 17-2 season. Team Captain Scott Tiner and second baseman Brian Harvey also sparkled offensively, with winning pitcher Niki Pelletier and battery mate Jessica Newton keeping the Bears sluggers in check. Platz Nation has now captured seven coed championships in eight years, securing its reputation as one of the most successful coed teams in Maine. Tiner will take his squad to compete in the Co-ed World Championships this October in Orlando, Fla. Members of the Platz team are: Front row, from left: Joe Locke and Toby Tiner, Jr.; middle row: Jenn Lola, Niki Pelletier, Ashley Peaslee and Jessica Newton; back row: Jared Kuvaja, Shane Ciriello, Captain Scott Tiner and Brian Harvey. Absent from photo are: Jon Cadman, John Golino, Rod Mercier and J.J. Varney.
