TURNER — Poland coach Kat McKay had a reasonable explanation why she couldn’t single out one player who made the difference against eighth-ranked Leavitt in a Western Class B softball preliminary game Tuesday.

As far as McKay was concerned, this was a total team effort, with strong pitching, smart base-running and timely hitting that allowed the ninth-ranked Knights to walk off with an 11-2 victory over the Hornets.

“We got lucky,” McKay said. “We made some great hits in the field that kind of just dropped in. They weren’t any big hits. They weren’t over their heads. They kind of just hit the turf.”

“There wasn’t a superstar today. It was across the board. I am just proud of my kids. We are going to go after Cape (Elizabeth) on Thursday.”

Pitcher Kylie Martin didn’t budge from the circle, striking out eight Leavitt batters and holding Leavitt to six hits. Martin didn’t walk a batter. Poland hammered out 13 hits, but both teams made four errors.

Poland’s five-run sixth inning sealed the deal. The Knights took advantage of an error, an RBI double by senior shortstop Lindsay Theriault (two hits) and a two-run single by Kelsey DeBurra (three hits, two RBIs) to make it 11-2.

The Knights quickly built a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning when Haley Whitworth smacked a two-run double. Throw in a sacrifice fly by Martin and a single by Kalor Plummer and Poland instantly became the front-runner.

But a four-run deficit didn’t really take the wind out of Hornets’ in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Angela Daigle got on with an error and came home with a run on Morgan Knowlton’s single. Knowlton held up at second until Emily Perkins brought Knowlton home with an RBI single.

The Knights got two more runs in the fifth, with Theriault’s single bringing home Michaella Arsenault.

“We made a big error there in the fourth inning which opened the door,” Leavitt coach Pete Higgins said. “Little things like that. It just wasn’t our day. They are a good team. We just couldn’t really be competitive unfortunately. Another day, who knows.”
