AUBURN — Herbert Clayton Coburn, 91, on Dec. 7, God opened Heaven’s gate and welcomed him home with open arms. He spent his last days of his long and lustrous life surrounded by his family.
He was born Dec. 2, 1921, and was raised and was a long-time resident of Auburn. In his earlier years, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. After his tour, he began a career as a psychiatric aide at Pineland Center, until his retirement in 1981. He had an array of talents and hobbies among them were displayed in the ring, as he was an avid boxer. He went on to win a number of awards, accolades and belts during his time as a boxer. He also enjoyed horses as well as going to the racetrack to bet on his favorite horse.
Herbert had a great talent to make anyone laugh and he had a contagious smile, whether it be standing in line at McDonald’s or running errands, he could shed light on anyone’s darkest day. He may not be with us physically, but he leaves behind his spirit and his legacy that will live on through the many hearts he touched for years to come.
He leaves behind his daughter, Dorothy Coburn; his sons, Charles “Chuck” Coburn, Harry Coburn and Billy Coburn and wife, Renee; he has several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a parrot, Randy; and a host of friends he collected throughout the years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Coburn.
We would like to express many thanks to the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their wonderful caregivers during this difficult time. He spoke highly of you all.
