AUGUSTA — Every basketball player wants to combine his dream game with a big spot against a top-notch opponent. Ben Allen of Winthrop accomplished that Saturday morning, shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the field on his way to 22 points and leading the undefeated Ramblers to a 67-53 MVC victory over Dirigo at Augusta Civic […]

Boys’ basketball: Vikings duo delivers
Anyone expressing high expectations to coach Scott Graffam about his Oxford Hills boys’ basketball team in the preseason was greeted with the yeah-but. As in, “Yeah, but we only have two returning players with any varsity experience.” Yeah, but that’s more than enough if they’re the right ones. One-third of the way through a ridiculously […]

Boys’ basketball: Vikings’ defense, free throws close out Devils
Or a bounce. Or a technical foul. Like the one that transformed a three-point lead to seven with 49 seconds remaining Tuesday night and launched Oxford Hills to a 62-51 victory over Lewiston. “Patrick Macro got the defensive rebound that led to the whole donnybrook,” Oxford Hills coach Scott Graffam. “That was a huge rebound […]

Well, that wouldn’t have helped. A range finder like the one some golfers use, perhaps, but not a shot clock. Lisbon and Telstar were […]

Boys’ basketball: Edward Little rallies, survives hungry Lawrence
AUBURN — Lew Jensen still looks a tad pale, a few pounds missing from his 6-foot-5 frame, after a stomach virus that wreaked havoc for two to three days this week. Saturday’s second half, though, the Edward Little boys’ basketball mainstay was the one making Lawrence experience the queasiness, chill and loss of appetite. Jensen […]

DIXFIELD — It was worth the wait for Dirigo. The Cougars used their court time wisely, opening up the passing lanes and displaying a smothering defense as they ran away with a 65-41 win over Monmouth in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Defoe Gymnasium on Friday. A foursome of players scored in double figures […]

Boys’ basketball: Winthrop wallops St. Dom’s
AUBURN — With his Winthrop boys’ basketball team nursing a roomy 17-point lead two minutes into the third quarter Friday night, Todd MacArthur calmly directed the Ramblers to “tighten up on defense.” Sure, Coach. Anything you say. The Ramblers raced to the finish with vise-grips in hand, holding St. Dom’s to four points and shutting […]
