Still remember Ethan

This is in response to a Sun Journal front page feature story, “‘Ghost bike’ to honor teen 20 years after hit-and-run death” (May 13). When Ethan was killed by a drunk driver in May 1998, I was a freshman at Edward Little High School and good friends with his older sister, Anna. In the article, […]

An end to student debt?

I write in response to a Sun Journal story (May 12) about Bates students protesting about student debt. Their call for an end to student debt is hard to understand or accept. I was disappointed in both the shallowness of their thoughts and the limits of the article. A college education is a commodity to […]

Send aid to the oppressed

In recent days, there have been more than  60 Palestinian protesters killed and nearly 3,000 injured on the Israel-Gaza Border. The protests were, arguably, a response to the movement of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem but, more intrinsically, the “unlivable” condition that is Gaza, according to the U.N. and NPR. When the right of people […]

Bellows has earned my vote

I have paid close attention to the job state Sen. Shenna Bellows has done since being elected in 2016. Her work ethic is superb. She has never missed a vote. Her work in committee has shown her attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture. Her leadership and ability to build bi-partisan coalitions […]

Ranked-choice baloney

Ranked-choice voting is nothing more than judging, be it someone’s character, an animal, fish, movie, or inanimate object, and perfectly acceptable for events such as who gets the blue ribbon for the best-tasting apple pie at the county fair. It has no place in political elections. Primary elections usually have several candidates seeking an office. […]

A fly that can fool you

I love the Sun Journal’s photos of flowers and insect visitors. The photo on page A8 on Wednesday, May 9, is gorgeous. The featured insect actually is a bee mimic: a fly, probably a “hoverfly” (family Syrphidae). The?se pollinators ?are excellent bee mimics? and the larvae of some species consume aphids.? ?Sharon Kinsman, Lewiston

Let your love-light shine

Having endured the onslaught and the temptations that are sure to follow, I am so thankful to say, “Here I am.” Challengers arise at a moment’s notice, and people need to have a thick skin if they are going to survive. But, just knowing where a person’s strength comes from, the battles ahead are just […]

Better retirement calculations

In his letter (May 13), Richard Proctor claims individuals are better off retiring at age 65 than at age 70. It is important to make such calculations. It is even more important to use accurate numbers, and not the misleading averages he cited. A better way to assess an individual’s situation is with Social Security’s […]

Comment was outrageous

In a White House meeting, Kelly Sadler, aide to President Donald Trump, on hearing of John McCain’s opposition to the president’s pick as CIA director because of her past support of torture, said of the Senator, “It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.” What a hard political atmosphere we are living in now, where one’s common […]

Support for Ned Claxton

I am endorsing Ned Claxton for state Senate. My support for him comes not from being family or a close friend; rather, it comes from having met him just a few months ago. Frankly, I was blown away. Enough to take the time to urge others to get to know him, too. I met Claxton […]
