It’s time for our elected officials to acknowledge immigrant essential workers with more than just words of thanks. As Congress debates passing further COVID relief packages, they need to include a pathway to citizenship and reunite families who have been kept apart by our inhuman immigration policies.

Froma Harrop: On the economy, Texas should not mess with California
As the pandemic draws to a close, California is sitting pretty with an operating budget surplus of $75 billion. This is the product of a surging economy and the collection of capital gains taxes. It would seem that a few rich Californians did not move to Texas after all.
Ann Luther and David Madland: Unions and democracy go together
Some advocates and analysts have been suggesting a symbiotic link between strong unions and a vibrant democracy. Their argument is that union organizing is an important, if not essential, tool in building a vibrant democracy, and has been almost since our founding.

The most common measure of labor efficiency is income per farmer, so the USDA has pushed factory farming to produce more income per farmer. But it comes at the expense of efficient use of land and machinery. Not to mention the quality of food.

We support Lee Holman for Hartford Selectboard. She was first elected in 2003, after working on the budget and road committees. She moved here at age 19, born in Lewiston. Even though she is paid a pittance for the hours she puts in, she gives the job her all. If residents care about the smooth […]
