In rebuttal: Mark Wood: Setting record straight on Jesus, masks
Elliott Epsteins’ latest guest column (Sept. 20) about whether Jesus would support wearing masks during the pandemic left me a little unsettled because I agreed with his conclusion, but not with his explanation of the scriptural record that he used — or didn’t use — to support his remarks. First, although Mr. Epstein claims that […]

Thomas Shields: Trump deserves people’s vote
President Trump entered politics from a competitive, rough and tumble business world. That conditioned his personality, which may offend some voters. He has been able to accomplish a considerable amount in spite of constant Democrat opposition. He remains undeterred. I admire his law and order actions which are in contrast with the weak Democrat-led cities […]

Mary Langelier: Collins, Gideon could put ad money to better use
Just a thought: If Susan Collins and Sara Gideon kept the money from one day’s commercials of badgering each other instead of what good they could do, they could feed the hungry children of Maine for as much as the money could buy. And, please follow the rules and stay safe. Mary Langelier, Lewiston

Richard Whiting: Oust Trump on Election Day
Trump’s refusals to commit to a peaceful transfer of power are proof of his disdain for our Constitution. They provide even more reasons why he is unfit for office. He hasn’t accomplished much except to create an immense workload for the next administration and Congress, including: strengthening the Hatch Act, better protecting inspectors general, passing […]

Richard Theriault: Cole is ‘smart choice’ for commissioner
This fall I will be voting for Scott Cole for Oxford County commissioner because he gets the job done. Many years ago, Rumford was seriously evaluated for an airport but ruled out due to the proximity of certain mountains. Federal focus then moved to Bethel, and I became involved with that town’s effort. However, six […]

Scott Currie: Support for Bettyann Sheats
I support Bettyann Sheats for reelection on Nov. 3. Bettyann exemplifies what I think is important as a Maine voter: her accessibility, her business sense as a small business owner and her commitment to looking out for what’s best for our community. In these trying times, experience is what is needed in Augusta, and Bettyann […]

Michael Sivulich: Reelect Claxton to Maine Senate
As a medical colleague of Dr. Ned Claxton for over 30 years, I’ve come to know him quite well. His background is invaluable to any health care-related legislation. Additionally, Ned will always place “people over party.” Perhaps most important, Ned is simply a kind, sensible, compassionate person – something which, sadly, is lacking in today’s […]

Rich Lowry: No, the Democrats won’t pack the Court
For many progressive opinion-makers, the only way to save the Supreme Court is to destroy it. They believe the best response to the Republican-held Senate confirming a Trump nominee to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court is to pack the Court if Democrats win in November. Holding out the court-packing threat, […]
