Auburn Public Library plans to host an illustrated talk on the rewards and challenges of beekeeping by Bill Hiss from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, via Zoom.

Hiss has been a hobbyist beekeeper since retiring from Bates College in 2013. He also serves as the organizer of the Androscoggin Beekeepers Club, a regional affiliate of the Maine State Beekeepers Association.

Beekeeping can be a fascinating commitment, according to a news release, but it has increasing challenges, from varroa mites to agricultural chemicals to possible climate change. Over a third of the food chain depends on bees: many vegetables, and almost all fruit and nuts.

Hobbyist beekeepers worldwide produce honey, but especially help the bees in reproducing themselves.

This program is part of of the library’s adult summer reading program, “Tales with Tails,” when adults read, learn and talk about nature and animals.

The program runs through Aug 31.
