AUBURN — A 23-year-old Lewiston man and his teenage passenger were hurt late Wednesday afternoon when their car struck a utility pole on Washington Street and rolled down an embankment.
The driver, Haji Haji, was charged with driving with a suspended license following the crash on the southbound side of Washington Street.
Both Haji and his passenger, a 17-year-old girl from Lewiston, were taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a variety of injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police, fire and rescue crews were called out to the area near Washington Street and Eastman Lane at about 6:15 p.m. for a report that occupants of the vehicle had been ejected when it rolled.
Police said it appeared the driver had attempted to veer from Washington Street onto Eastman Lane when he struck the guardrail at the intersection.
“The vehicle then launched into the air and struck a utility pole, snapping it in half, before landing at the bottom of the embankment at this location,” said Auburn police Lt. Scott Watkins.
Central Maine Power sent a crew to begin repairs to the damaged pole.
Haji and his passenger were still being evaluated at CMMC later Wednesday night.
Auburn police were continuing to investigate the crash later Wednesday night.
