100 Years Ago: 1921
The men’s club of the Elm Street Universalist church will stage the most novel dinner over served in these cities tonight in the vestry. Every detail has been prepared, and attended to by the men, who will even serve the delicacies to ladies. The hour is 6 o’clock and the public is invited to attend. The proceeds will be devoted to the Men’s club expenses.
50 Years Ago: 1971
Dedication of the C. Ray Thompson Lounge in the physical education complex at Bates College took place Friday night following a dinner meeting of the Bates College Club at Hathorn Hall. A feature of the event was the unveiling of a portrait of the former Bates College coach which will be hung in the lounge and which was given to Bates by the College club. Arthur Bradbury ’49 of Hartford. Conn., club president, also announced the establishment of the C. Ray Thompson Memorial Scholarship by the college in his memory, made possible through contributions of many friends and former Bates athletes. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student annually to a deserving student.
25 Years Ago: 1996
Steve and Daphne Izer of Lisbon, members of Parents Against Tired Truckers, met with Maine Rep. John Baldacci in his Washington, D.C., office to discuss highway safety issues recently. They were in Washington for the first annual Sorrow to Strength Truck Safety Summit.
