LEWISTON — And then there were four. The Class A hockey playoffs come down to two more days, the first of which is today as the four remaining teams clash to whittle the field down to two.

And what a pair of clashes we have, with two big rivalry games set to decide each conference.

In Western A, at 6 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, Thornton Academy and Biddeford, essentially neighboring schools who share a home rink and a storied past of their own, will meet. Biddeford is looking for its fourth trip to the state final in five seasons. The Tigers haven’t lost in their previous three trips, either, and could cement a dynasty with another title.

Thornton is looking to finally get over that hump. A contender for the past three or four years, the Trojans always seem to come up just a bit short. Is this finally the season?

And then, of course, the granddaddy of them all. Lewiston vs. St. Dom’s, the oldest and most-contested hockey rivalry in Maine, renews once more following the first game. Lewiston has had a tremendous past 10 years, but has won just one state title — back in 2002.  Last year, adding fuel to this fire, the Saints eliminated the Blue Devils in the regional semifinal round with a 2-0 shutout as the No. 4 seed.

St. Dom’s, meanwhile, played most recently in the state final two years ago, losing to Waterville as a representative of Western A. The Saints’ last title came way back in 2000.
