WEST PARIS — Three public hearings will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, April, 8, at the Ring-McKeen Post 151 American Legion Hall. Expected to draw the most interest, is a resolution that would make West Paris a 2nd Amendment sanctuary town.
Resident Robert Carey asked selectmen to sign the resolution at a select board meeting in March, but town officials agreed that they should get input from the public before making any decisions. No voting on the resolution will occur at the hearing, but a special town meeting will be scheduled soon after to see what residents want to do.
The language of the resolution says the town would “provide sanctuary from law enforcement attempts to enforce any and all state and federal mandates and restricted laws enacted that would violate the original intent of protections given individuals under the United States Constitution as well as the State of Maine Constitution that states ‘shall never be questioned.”
Also on Thursday, there will be hearings on a Food Sovereignty Ordinance and a Beacon for Sovereignty Resolution, with the latter dealing with citizens who claim they cannot wear masks because of health reasons.
Following the hearings, selectmen will hold their regularly scheduled meeting.
The legion hall is at 8 Church St. in West Paris.
March 25 meeting
Selectmen unanimously approved purchasing a pickup truck for the town fire department from Bessey Motors in South Paris for a total cost of $43,935. It was one of two bids the town received, with the other coming from Ripley and Fletcher Ford in South Paris, who’s bid came it at $51,782.
The $43,935 to purchase the truck will come out of the town’s equipment reserve fund, leaving $116,107 left once the truck is bought.
