Alex Hemingway won the classical and freestyle races to help Mt. Abram capture the MVC Nordic team championship at Sugarloaf on Tuesday.
Hemingway, a junior, also won both races the 2020 MVC championships before going on to win the Class C classical state title and take second in the freestyle.
Hemingway won Tuesday’s classical race with a time of 14:47.6, beating teammate Cam Walters (15:28.8), who took second, and Spruce Mountain’s Abraham Geissinger (15:56.1), who came in third. Jeff Warnock of Mt. Abram took fourth (16:45.2) and Tommie Owen of Orono was fifth (17:14.9).
Hunter Berry (21:18.6) was Dirigo’s highest finisher, coming in eighth, and Christopher Durant (26:34.7) was Mountain Valley’s top finisher, taking 16th.
In the freestyle race, Hemingway beat Walters by nearly five seconds with a time of 6:57.0 to Walters’ 7:01.8. In third was Geissinger (7:16.1) followed by Warnock (7:21.3) in fourth and Orono’s Kyle McClennan (7:30.4) in fifth.
Spencer Jacques (9:16.0) was the Dirigo’s top finisher freestyle finishing, coming in eighth, while Durant (10:07.5) finished 12th for Mountain Valley.
Mt. Abram, with 1,564 points, defeated Orono (1,542) by 22 points in the team competition. Spruce Mountain (1,538) came in third, while Dirigo (1,508) took fourth and Mountain Valley (741) in fifth.
Ruth White of Orono swept the girls races, winning the classical race with a time of 18:50.1 and the freestyle race with a 8:24.4.
Mt. Abram’s Julia Wells (19:00.0) and Emily Kidd (19:03.2) came second and third, respectively, in the classical race, followed by Orono’s Julia White (21:32.1) in fourth place and Rebecca White (22:17.8) in fifth.
Phoebe Dow was Winthrop’s top finisher (sixth place, 23:44.6), while Dirigo’s Savannah Williams (26:14.5).
Kidd took second in the freestyle race with a time of 8:46.3, while Wells (8:47.7) came in third. Julia White (9:12.9) and Rebecca White (9:51.4) took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Dow (10:40.7) came in eighth and Williams (13:51.6) finished 15th.
Orono won the team event with a score of 1,573, and Winthrop (1,529) was second, followed by Mt. Abram (1,169) and Dirigo (382).
