BRIDGTON — The town’s emergency management director and code enforcement officer are reminding Mainers to clean snow from the roofs of their homes.

According to a statement, the reminder was prompted by roof collapses in the area, including one Monday morning at a riding arena in Lisbon. Several horses inside were not harmed.

A cubic foot of snow can weigh up to 20 pounds, according to the statement, and the recent freezing rain has made snow denser and heavier. Emergency Management Director Todd Perreault and Code Enforcement Officer Rob Baker said because of the weight of the snow, people on ladders should be careful when cleaning off rooftops.

Perreault and Baker warn residents to “shovel at a slow, steady pace.”
