LEWISTON — A man and woman from Lewiston were still being treated at the hospital Thursday after a head-on crash Wednesday on College Street that left the woman trapped inside the wreckage.
Police said Merlin Raven, 81, and Rosemarie Murphy, 65, were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after the 7:30 p.m. crash near Montello Heights.
The driver of the second vehicle, Isaac Banks, 18, of Turner did not require hospitalization.
Investigators said Banks was traveling on College Street in a 2009 Toyota Camry when he apparently crossed into the path of the incoming 1997 Jeep Cherokee driven by Raven.
The impact of the crash left Murphy trapped inside the wreckage, police said. Lewiston firefighters used extrication tools to free her, after which she and Raven were taken to CMMC.
The victims’ conditions were not available Thursday night.
After the accident, police closed a section of College Street as the cleanup began and an investigation got underway.
“Out of an abundance of caution due to the extensive damage to the Jeep and the potential of internal injuries, our accident reconstructionist was called in to investigate,” said Lt. David St. Pierre of the Lewiston Police Department.
No charges had been filed as of Thursday night, according to police.
