AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine state police say troopers used tear gas to end a standoff with an Augusta man who’s accused of killing a man whose body was found along a road on the outskirts of Hallowell.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland says 30-year-old Peter Bathgate refused to leave an apartment when authorities arrived early Tuesday. He says negotiators were in touch with him before a tactical team used tear gas and took him into custody shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Bathgate was charged with murder in the death of 47-year-old Paul Allen of Augusta, whose body was found on Sunday.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office declared Allen’s death a homicide following an autopsy Monday. No additional information on the autopsy results was released.
