TURNER — First comes Santa, then the gift of gravel.

Turner will host its second annual tree lighting at 6 p.m. Monday at the town hall with local arborist Greg Roy decorating the town’s 35-foot spruce for the event.

“Santa will arrive and he will magically light the tree,” Town Manager Eva Leavitt said.

About 50 people turned out last year. It’s rain, snow or shine, with caroling, refreshments and Santa visits after the lighting.

Then, at 7 p.m., everything moves indoor for a special town meeting.

Townspeople will be asked to accept the gift of 23 acres owned by Ronald Poulin of Lisbon and Poulin’s Patron Properties that abuts the town’s gravel pit on Pit Road.

Leavitt said Poulin is the former owner of Sandy Bottom mobile home park and had originally intended to expand the park into those 23 acres. He didn’t, and the new owner of Sandy Bottom wasn’t interested in buying that land.

“That left Mr. Poulin with some options, and there wasn’t any right of way” to reach the property, Leavitt said.

Turner already maintains an 83-acre pit, where it gets all of its winter gravel, adjacent to Leavitt’s property. Leavitt said the 23 acres also are a gravel pit and easily accessible from the town land. Accepting the gift would take the property off the tax roster, a loss of about $120 at the current mill rate.

“It would be a wonderful addition,” Leavitt said.

After the special town meeting, selectmen will move on to their regular meeting agenda.

On Saturday, the town will hold a rabies clinic at the Turner Village Fire Station from 9 to 11 a.m.
