AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Independent Eliot Cutler was leading Paul LePage in Maine’s race for governor as early results were tallied.

With votes counted from 13 percent of the state’s precincts, Cutler led with 40 percent of the vote, while LePage had 32 percent and Libby Mitchell 22 percent.

Fellow independents Shawn Moody and Kevin Scott filled out the list of contestants to succeed two-term Democratic Gov. John Baldacci.

LePage has stressed pocketbook issues during his campaign, while Mitchell has talked job creation and Cutler has called for government restructuring.
