BELFAST (AP) — Maine fire officials say a cigarette is likely to blame for a fire that killed an 81-year-old Belfast woman.

According to the state fire marshal’s office, Carol Howard’s nightgown caught fire after she apparently fell asleep sometime Tuesday while smoking in a chair in her mobile home. Investigators say she collapsed in a hallway, where she was found by a relative who came to check on her.

Officials say Howard died from the burns after being taken to a hospital.
