I thank Bob Pelletier for taking the time to submit a letter to the editor (Jan. 5) about a brawl that had occurred in downtown Lewiston.

Before going further, I must correct him. First, the Lewiston Police Department did their job in a professional manner. Also, the General Assistance Office cannot be closed. The real problem is local and state politicians who stand by and side with Lewiston’s abundance of “freeloaders” in order to avoid negative criticism in the press.

It is time that frustrated taxpayers follow Pelletier’s example — write letters expressing their feelings. People should not worry about spelling and grammar — many college graduates have problems with that. It is people’s anger and frustration that matter.

Sitting silently on the sidelines gives people no right to complain.
