Fire broke out in a garage in West Gardiner late Wednesday, destroying vehicles and a recreational vehicle.
West Gardiner Fire Chief Gary Hickey II said the garage at 107 Benson Road was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 11 p.m.
“A neighbor from across the street heard a couple of blows of the tires popping and looked out and saw the fire,” he said.
Apparently, Hickey said, one of the residents had come home from hockey practice not long before and parked in the garage.
A power line hooked to the garage came down across Benson Road, he said, limiting access to the site from Hallowell-Litchfield Road by other fire departments responding.
Instead, firefighters were able to draw water from a pond on Manning Drive. Litchfield firefighters were able to put a couple of tankers there, and Manchester firefighters could hook up at the water supply.
The fire destroyed the three cars in the garage, a recreational vehicle and a pickup truck parked outside, Hickey said; and it damaged a work van and the side of the house.
In all, firefighters were on the scene for about five hours.
In addition to West Gardiner, Litchfield and Manchester, firefighters also responded from Farmingdale, Pittston and Gardiner.
West Gardiner property records show the property is owned by Donna McLaughlin.
