Jared Golden is the newly elected representative for Maine Second Congressional District to the U.S. House of Representatives. I offer my congratulations.

He achieved that position by defeating Republican Bruce Poliquin by 3,509 votes, or by a whopping 1 percent. Additionally, his victory was the result of ranked-choice voting. Not what one would call a landslide.

Golden was elected to represent everyone in the Second District and that includes the 49.5 percent who did not vote for him. That is not going to be an easy task. Comments such as he made in an e-mail to the Portland Press Herald and I quote, “Maine people are tired of this kind of poor leadership, which is why they voted for change in November” won’t make things any easier.

I wish Golden the best, but he must not forget the other 49 percent he also represents.

Edmund Lewis, Farmington
