NORWAY — Officer John Lewis of the Norway Police Department told the Board of Selectmen on Thursday night his police dog, Bolo, is close to wrapping up his training.

Lewis proposed in October 2017 the town buy a police dog to track people and sniff out evidence, including drugs. The purebred Labrador retriever, which would not be trained to bite, would live with Lewis.

Selectmen unanimously authorized the purchase in December.

Bolo is now trained to search for drugs, Lewis said, adding he and Bolo have already received several calls for their services.

“While we’ve gotten a lot of calls from dispatch for drug searches, we’ve gotten even more calls for tracking assistance,” Lewis told the board.

“It’ll be nice when I don’t have to tell them, ‘No, we’re not quite there yet.’”

Lewis told the board he has enjoyed working with Bolo.

“We’ve been doing a lot of PR at different places, and all he wants to do is work,” Lewis said.

“We visited Aubuchon Hardware a little while ago, and there was a bunch of kids there to see him and pet him. But the second he walked through the doors, all he wanted to do was search the shelves for drugs.”
