Name: Marc Vanderwood

Hobbies: Spending time with my wonderful wife and son, who have been very supportive of my position and re-election. I also enjoy racing sled dogs, running cross country, skiing and mountain biking.
Can you talk a little bit about your background? What do you do for work?
I have a bachelors degree of business administration from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. I have worked for 20-plus years in information technology specializing in accounting and business software systems. I also volunteer as a board member for Western Maine Community Action.
What are some things you’ve accomplished as treasurer that you’re proud of?
The treasurer’s office has completed the following activities. These are not my accomplishments alone, but the accomplishments of the department as a whole:
• Implemented an electronic time and attendance system that integrates with the county’s financial and payroll system;
• Transitioned to biweekly payroll, allowing for more accurate and timelier payroll processing and reduction of processing costs;
• Helped facilitate training for employees in financial software, enabling them to take advantage of capabilities; and
• Provided better financial and analytical reporting for county commissioners and to support county operations.
What are some things you’d like to accomplish moving forward, if re-elected?
I’d like to work with county commissioners in determining a way of lowering the amount of interest paid annually on the tax anticipation note. Since the county’s fiscal year does not match the Oxford County towns’ tax year, the county is forced to borrow funds annually to cover costs. The interest amount is in the tens of thousands each year.
I’d also like to partner with the commissioners in helping to find a way that we can preserve the casino funds. This would allow the county to continue to have an earmarked reserve account.
I would like to continue to work with Oxford County officials and employees to improve financial processes, procedures and reporting. This will save taxpayers money and better serve our county workers.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters?
(The candidate did not provide an answer to this question.)
