100 years ago: 1918

A Salvation Army Relief Station is to be established on Middle Street Lewiston, in a house that has been rented opposite the Salvation Army barracks. This is to take the place, in a measure, of the industrial home formerly conducted by the Salvation Army on Lincoln Street. Lewiston Adjutant Abbott, who is in charge of the local corps, will conduct the new enterprise and he will be assisted by Capt. Henry Doughty, who has had much experience in this line of work.

50 years ago: 1968

William Lelansky, whose father, Joe Lelansky, was presented the Eagle Scout award, in 1944, last night received his Eagle Scout badge from Walter A. Pelletier, retired chairman of the Abnaki District. Another member of the family, brother, Gregory, received his Eagle award in 1996. Prior to Pelletier’s presentation, District Executive “Scotty” Dahlbeck addressed the Troop concerning present-day Scouting and the significance of the earning the Eagle badge before entering high school. He also discussed the Explorer program for high school boys. In addition to presenting the Eagle award, Doc Pelletier gave a talk entitled “The Unknown Scout,” a well-known tale about the introduction of Scouting to America.

25 years ago: 1993

Ten members of the Bicentennial Committee in Farmington met to finalize several plans for the 1994 bicentennial year. So far, the group has plans for a big July Fourth celebration, a Founders’ Day event, a special Bicentennial Postmark and more. Several organizations are planning events and making them specialized for the bicentennial year. The Rotary Club will have the biggest and best parade ever for the Fourth and the firemen will host the statewide Firemen’s Muster in Farmington in September of 1994. Titcomb Ski Club is considering a special weekend, a biathlon or other special events. Other groups are helping with fund-raising efforts. Is your group planning something? If so, we need the date and event by Oct. 31 in order to put it on the special bicentennial calendar. The Farmington Historical Society and the Bicentennial Committee are teaming up to sponsor this special calendar. It will be a collectible or a wonderful Christmas gift.
