The telephone will hereafter be used to notify members of the Lewiston and Auburn Rotary Cub of the meetings, programs, etc., instead of the system which has been in use since the club was organized. By using this cooperative system among the members, all can be advised within a very few minutes, whenever the occasion requires.

50 years ago: 1968

The late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, in his personal memoir on the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, said that after President John F. Kennedy had written to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, demanding the removal of Russian missiles from Cuba, there was little optimism at the White House. “The President was not optimistic,” wrote Kennedy, “Nor was I … he had not abandoned hope, but what hope there was now rested with Khrushchev’s revising his course within the next few hours. It was a hope, not an expectation. The expectation was a military conference by Tuesday and possibly Monday. The next day, however, Khrushchev agreed to dismantle and withdraw the missiles under inspection and supervision.”

25 years ago: 1993

“Support of Cancer Patients and Their Families” will be the topic of discussion at the annual Father Robert E. McDonald Pastoral Care seminar set for Wednesday at Central Maine Medical Center. The seminar will provide an in-depth overview of CMMC’s comprehensive cancer care program. We would like to improve the working relationship between the cancer-care providers at CMMC and the pastors in the communities we serve. The seminar will give pastors in the region the opportunity to meet direct-care providers and talk with them about issues of mutual concern.
