AUBURN — Stanton Bird Club members Steven Reed and Douglas Boyd will speak at the Auburn-Lewiston Rotary Breakfast Club at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.
Reed, who is retired and has a master’s degree in environmental education, is an avid birder and naturalist. He is an active volunteer for the Stanton Bird Club as a tour leader as well as a land steward on their Thorncrag and Woodbury properties. He leads walk for everyone from school children to scientists visiting the Gordon Institute at Bates College. In 1999, Reed did a North American BIG YEAR birding by crossing the U.S. to Oregon and working his way down and across to Texas. Before wearing out his vehicle and putting a giant dent in his wallet, he was able to list 512 of the country’s 700-plus species over eight months.
Boyd, who is also retired and an avid birder and traveler, has a BS in agriculture with a major in wildlife biology. He is a co-leader with Reed and Judy Marden for the Stanton Bird Club walks from Bates College in April and May during the spring bird migration. Doug feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to bird in several European countries, Iceland, Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean as well as many parts of the U.S. and Canada.
The meeting is at the UMC, 439 Park Ave. Cost for breakfast is $10.
